Guided tours of the Observatoire’s Meudon site.

The Look-out post(Observatory) of Meudon is implanted on a former(ancient) royal domain, fitted out at the beginning of the XVIth century with the construction of a castle the Renaissance for Duchess d’ Etampes. The current activity of the Look-out post(Observatory) feeds on diverse observations (telescopes of height, satellites) and recovers all the domains of the astronomy: we study not only the sun, but also the planets, the stars and the galaxies, as well as the interplanetary and intersidereal gas.

THE TOUR (tour length: 2 hours)

The tour takes place outdoors over a distance of about 1 km. Visitors will be shown the following observation instruments:
- a one-metre telescope in a dome;
- a 60-cm telescope on an equatorial mount, in a dome;
- the large siderostat, where the projected image of the sun can be seen (weather permitting). The tour includes an educational trail representing the solar system on a scale of 1 m per 10 million km. Addressed to the general public.

The telescope inside the Chateau Neuf’s dome is the largest in Europe and it was declared a historical monument in 1972. Thanks to the funds secured by the Observatoire de Paris, the telescope is undergoing restoration work. We regret that the site is temporarily closed to the public.
