Guided tours of the Observatoire de Paris

Guided tours by astronomers from the Observatoire.

Visitors stepping into the Perreault Building, whose architecture dates back to 1667, are entering one of France’s most ancient scientific institutions, located in the heart of the capital. Created by Colbert, the Observatoire de Paris has participated in major astronomical discoveries for the past three centuries.

THE TOUR (tour length: 2 hours)

The tour will take visitors through every floor of the Perreault Building, where they will discover:

-  In the ground floor, the talking clocks room, including the first talking clock created by E. Esclangon in 1933.
-  In the first floor, the grand gallery, featuring some of the most remarkable instruments in the Observatoire’s collection, as well as the Council Room, with its portraits of the Observatoire’s directors.
-  In the second floor, Cassini Hall, through which runs the Paris meridian along a north-south axis marked by a brass strip.
-  On the upper roof, the 19th-century Arago dome and its astronomical telescope. The tour continues in the gardens (weather permitting) with a visit to two buildings, one housing an equatorial telescope and the other a meridian telescope, both from the 19th century.
